How to add alt tags on images and why you should add them

1. What Is Alt Text?

Alt text, or alternative text, is a short description added to the HTML code of a webpage to explain the content of an image. It helps search engines understand the image and assists users with visual impairments who rely on screen readers.

2. Why Is Alt Text Important for Image SEO?

Alt text plays a crucial role in image SEO (Search Engine Optimization) for several reasons. Firstly, a significant portion of online searches involve Google Image searches, accounting for about 22.6% of all searches. As a result, images present a valuable opportunity to attract more organic traffic through SEO.

3. How to add alt and title attributes in WordPress

To add alt and title attributes to images in WordPress, follow these steps:

  • Log in to your WordPress website.
  • Once logged in, you will be directed to the WordPress Dashboard.
  • Open the post or page where you want to add the alt and title attributes to the image.
  • Find the image you want to edit and click on it to access the image settings.
  • In the Block tab of the sidebar, which appears when you click on the Image block, you will find the Image settings.
  • Look for the fields labeled “Alt Text” and “Title Attribute.”
  • Enter a descriptive and relevant alt text in the Alt Text field. This text should provide a clear description of the image’s content and purpose.
  • If you want to set a specific title for the image, enter it in the Title Attribute field. The title attribute is optional and appears as a tooltip when a user hovers over the image.
  • After adding the alt text and title attribute, click the “Update” button in the upper right corner to save your changes.

Remember, it is important to craft meaningful alt text for each image to improve accessibility for visually impaired users and enhance your website’s SEO. Additionally, providing a title attribute can offer additional context and information for users interacting with the image.
