You check your Google Ads account and the cost per click for “house painters” jumped again. It is not your imagination. Painting is one of the most expensive service categories in local PPC, and most of the reasons have nothing to do with how well your account is built.
That does not mean the cost is fixed. Some of it is the market. A large share of it is fixable, and fixing it does not require cutting spend or accepting fewer leads.
What Drives the Cost Up
Three forces push painting CPCs higher than most local service categories.
High job value.
A single exterior repaint can run several thousand dollars, so competitors can afford to bid aggressively and still turn a profit on a small percentage of clicks converting. This raises the auction floor for everyone bidding on the same terms.
Lead generation aggregators.
Sites that collect painting leads and resell them to multiple contractors bid up the same core keywords, then sell the resulting leads back to painting companies at a markup. You are often competing against a company whose entire business model is reselling the click you are trying to win directly.
Weak account structures.
Broad match keywords, thin ad copy, and a single generic landing page produce low Quality Scores. Google charges lower Quality Score accounts more for the same ad position, which means two companies bidding on the same term can pay very different amounts for the same click.
You cannot change the first two. You have full control over the third, and it is usually where the biggest savings live.
Fixing What You Control
Tighten match types.
Broad match keywords trigger your ads for searches only loosely related to what you offer, wasting spend on clicks that were never going to convert. Move core terms to phrase match and build a negative keyword list that grows every week for the first two months of any campaign.
Match ad copy to search intent exactly.
An ad that says “House Painters” for someone searching “how much does exterior painting cost” mismatches intent. Write separate ads for research-stage searches and ready-to-hire searches, since serving the wrong ad to the wrong intent tanks click through rate and drags Quality Score down with it.
Build dedicated landing pages.
Sending every click to your homepage forces one page to serve interior buyers, exterior buyers, and commercial buyers at once. A landing page that matches the specific ad it supports converts better and scores higher with Google, which lowers your cost per click over time.
Add geographic precision.
Bidding on broad city or state terms pulls in clicks from outside your actual service area. Tighten your geo targeting to the counties or zip codes you actually serve, and use location extensions so Google can match intent more precisely before the click even happens.
The Real Fix Is Structure, Not Budget
A painting company that doubles its budget without fixing these issues just spends twice as much on the same leaky account. The companies that bring cost per lead down significantly almost always do it through better keyword segmentation, tighter negatives, and landing pages built for a specific service and intent, not through a bigger bid.
Review your search terms report and Quality Score by keyword monthly. These two reports tell you exactly where money is leaking, and they cost nothing to check.
